Installing Nimble Viewer on macOS
==================================

1. Drag "Nimble Viewer" into the Applications folder shown in this window.

2. Open Applications and double-click Nimble Viewer.

3. The first time you launch, macOS will show:

       "Apple could not verify Nimble Viewer is free of malware..."

   This appears because Nimble Viewer is a free app and is not
   distributed through Apple's paid Developer ID program. The app is safe.

   To open it:

     a. Click "Done" to dismiss the warning.
     b. Open System Settings -> Privacy & Security.
     c. Scroll to the bottom. You will see a message:
            "Nimble Viewer.app was blocked to protect your Mac."
     d. Click "Open Anyway".
     e. Confirm in the next dialog and enter your password if asked.

   From this point on, Nimble Viewer will launch normally by double-click.

Alternative (Terminal users)
----------------------------

If you prefer, after dragging the app into Applications, run:

    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Nimble Viewer.app"

Then launch Nimble Viewer normally. No further warnings will appear.

Why this is needed
------------------

macOS attaches a "quarantine" flag to apps downloaded from the internet
and refuses to launch them unless the developer pays Apple's $99/year
Developer ID program for notarization. Nimble Viewer is free and open,
so it is distributed ad-hoc signed instead. Following the steps above
tells macOS to trust the app once.

System requirements
-------------------

  - macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later
  - Two builds are published. Pick the DMG that matches your Mac:
        Nimble-Viewer-<version>-arm64.dmg     for Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4)
        Nimble-Viewer-<version>-x86_64.dmg    for Intel Macs
    If you are unsure, open Apple menu -> About This Mac. The "Chip"
    line says either "Apple ..." (arm64) or "Intel..." (x86_64).

Troubleshooting
---------------

"Nimble Viewer.app is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it
to the Trash."

  This is a different Gatekeeper variant of the same warning. Run:

      xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Nimble Viewer.app"

  Then launch Nimble Viewer normally.

"You can't open the application because it is not supported on this Mac."

  You probably downloaded the wrong architecture. Delete the app and
  download the DMG that matches your Mac (arm64 for Apple Silicon,
  x86_64 for Intel).

App launches and immediately quits / crashes on launch.

  Check that your macOS is 11 (Big Sur) or newer. From Apple menu ->
  About This Mac, look at the "macOS" line. Older versions are not
  supported.
